Welcome To FUEL
Friends Union for Energising Lives (FUEL) stems from the understanding that the youth in India form one of the most vulnerable groups, who on the one hand are expected to be the leaders to determine the destiny of India, and on the other lack essential information and opportunities to succeed in life.
Youth in the age group of 15-29 years comprise 27.5% of the population. There exists a huge potential to increase the contribution of this class of the nation’s citizenry by increasing their labour force participation and their productivity.
FUEL is a non-profit organisation which has its origins in Pune, was initiated in 2006 and emerged from the idea of providing students with access to information and opportunities.
Story of FUEL
Ketan Deshpande and his friends were close to being traumatized Class 12 passed, 16 year olds, having either missed entrance exams or having got their forms rejected, or having not known of education avenues altogether. While any other student of their age would have chosen to compromise and stay with the problems. Ketan decided to do something extraordinary.
Ketan compiled information of major entrance exams and education opportunities after class 12, and published it as a book Students FUEL. The book was widely accepted, but students were in need of more help than just information of opportunities. A large number of students were making mistakes in complicated application process and missing vital and opportunities of their lives.
Notifications of entrance tests are released from November to February, when most students are busy in preparing for board exams. Many miss out on these notifications. Entrance tests and competitive exams follow almost immediately after HSC exams and given the large number of such tests being conducted for various disciplines, students land in a tight spot while gathering information and applying for them” Ketan observed.
Considering the need, Ketan, along with his friends started conducting seminars for class 12 students, to give them a complete guidance on all education opportunities, with timelines of exams, details of documents required, and exams paper patterns along with guidance on how to fill up forms, etc. Ketan then founded the NGO FUEL (Friends Union for Energizing Lives) with the mission of saving students from missing education opportunities in their lives.

Challenge of Youth Education and Employment
According to the World Development Report 2013, 9% of males and 11% females aged between 15 to 24 years are unemployed.
- Limited awareness among youth on admissions in schools, colleges, and specifically in professional courses.
- Weak economic status prevents youth from utilising their potential
- Severe urban – rural divide in terms of education and career opportunities
- A high percentage of youth, after graduation at Bachelor’s level or at post-graduation levels in engineering, medicine, law, nursing, and other disciplines remain unemployed or are under-employed and under-paid. This is primarily due to lack of professional and employment driven training.
- Youth are not encouraged to pursue careers in line with their vocational interests. They have to accept whatever job opportunity comes their way. FUEL enables Indian youth to pursue a career, which is in line with their aptitudes, interests and capabilities.
Mission – Every student with equal education and career opportunities.
Lack of clear information of education and career opportunities is a major obstacle before students, which prevents them from reaching the right opportunity at the right time. Complicated Documentation processes and foggy system formalities restrict the progress of brilliant students, also hampering the country’s growth.
Mal-education is problem where students are unable to choose the correct education and career path suitable for their interest and aptitude, primarily because of lack of information.
Fuel has a very systematic way of reaching out to student with good amount of data, statistics and documentation which is generated with thousands of hours of R&D in various streams
